Reaching for the skies

Magnet #747 - Icarus, high up on Empire State (1931)

Social photographer Lewis Wickes Hine made this image during the construction of the Empire State Building in 1931. An amazing photo, and the title is certainly indicative of how society felt about the early days of skyscraper construction.

I thought it fitting for a couple of reasons. The first is that one of the giants in skyscraper developments, Frank Williams passed away recently. He's responsible, or co-responsible for many Manhattan towers. In fact, he was brought in on an international basis whenever companies would want "American corporate architecture." I've never really thought about our corporate architecture having a personality before, so that's pretty interesting.

The other reason that I selected this image today, is because it's Wednesday, Day 9 of 20. And if I'm hanging by a rope already, I can't wait to see us next Wednesday night after we've had 2,100 kids run through this course. Oiy. Should be interesting.

Sweet dreams are made of these

Magnet #746 - David Tennant...again

So yesterday, after I said that I prefer macho men (goodness, that sounds ridic) men, I went to bed and promptly dreamed of David Tennant. Clearly, the opposite of macho, and way the more metro and surely off the real life list, but definitely on the onscreen list.

In my dream, for whatever reason, I was apartment shopping with a coworker, and we were running through this absolutely gorgeous apartment - and get this, it was small from the outside, and bigger on the inside...we just kept opening doors and finding new rooms. Such a great TARDIS apartment.

Then David showed up, wearing this ultrasoft brown leather jacket - I actually think it's the one from his "Who do you think you are?" episode, and he was all nervous about the next Doctor.

Seriously.

He said that he was nervous for Matt Smith, and how his (David's) last appearance was going to be Matt's first. And we were all duh, yeah, and p.s., btw, you know that already happened, right?

And then, I got to watch the start of the next episode, and it was damned good. It started out with David's Ten getting stuck in a timewall (whatever that is) - so from his upper torso he was Ten, and from his lower half, he was Eleven. I mean, there was a whole Murray Gold score and everything.

Good grief. I can't even begin to understand why I'm dreaming of the next Doctor Who episode, I can't even remember when Easter is, for when it airs in the UK.

But I will tell you, sweet dreams sure do put you in a good mood. Well, at least until the workday begins, anyway.

Hearts and stars and smiles, oh my!

Magnet #733a & 733b - Red and Blue Hearts and Stars and Smilies

When people at work find themselves without gift wrap or ribbon, they totally come find me, because I keep a small stash of both at my desk.

The same goes for stickers.

What?

Aside the fact that I hate throwing anything away, one never knows when one needs to wrap something quickly. The trick is also to keep anything that could potentially be wrapping, or those little things you wrap with the bows, or fun things to stick into cards, or whatever. (Note, I haven't even delved into the stash of notecards in the other drawer here.)

I found this the other day in my stash - it's a pile of holographic plastic cardstocky stuff that I had from literally a dozen years ago. Haven't a clue where I picked it up, I just couldn't bear to throw it away. It's too cute, and always makes for childlike fascination from kids and adults alike.

So, I just took a section of it and made it into this one magnet.

Of course, when I started, I had a good 3x5 piece affixed to the magnetic sheet. Then I started trimming it. Only, after I started trimming in a circle to get it perfect, I couldn't stop. So it's about a inch in diameter now. And not perfect.

It's kinda like how I kept trimming my sister's hair when she was little. I kept trying to get the length to be straight across the back. She kept fidgeting. It kept getting shorter and shorter.

Finally, when I got caught, we tried to convince her we were going for Debbie Gibson's hair.

Man.

She was really mad.

Oops.

When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie

Magnet #640 - Pizza

So, here's the deal. Over the next two weeks, I'll be off and away to Italy for the Save the World sister/fiance's wedding.

Which means I may or may not have time to blog each day. Oiy. It could be good, it could be bad - for me, that is. All I know is that it might be the first time in 640 days I may not be near a computer! How ever will I make it through to December? Why didn't I learn how to post from my BlackBerry? Or start writing all my posts ahead of time and timer set them to autopost? Eh, oh, well.

Anyway, I know it's kinda stereotypical, using pizza to herald the upcoming trip to Italy. But, two things. Pizza's what we had for lunch in Venice, last time I was there. And, Save the World sister's already running around Florence, and her first thing to report back to me was that they saw French Fry pizza. Whoa. See, now, that sounds like an American heart attack waiting to happen. Oiy.

So, yeah, I thought this cute bottlecap magnet from @KristinaMyers' Etsy store, would be fitting.

Oh, Charlie

Magnet#639 - Charlies Angels

I picked up this swag magnet several years ago when Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle came out.

Totally used to watch when I was little - my parents and I. Every week. Loved them. So much so, I used to want be one of them. Loved them.

I was worried when Drew brought them back - but I won't lie. I actually loved the revamps.
