The sky is my father

Magnet #1177 - Navajo Sand Art, Father Sky

The Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House is the home of the New York branch of the National Museum of the American Indian. A must-see if you're in downtown NY, and as part of the Smithsonian, it's free!

Really interesting exhibits and the building itself it totally gorgeous, both inside and out.

I picked up this magnet - a Navajo sand art painting magnet with Father Sky depicted. From what I've learned, sand art paintings are used in holy ceremonies where Earth people and Holy people come together.

In fact, the Navajo destroy their sand art upon completion, releasing the spirits into the wind (I assume). Kinda freaked me out that I had not only kept one of these paintings, but that it's in the form of a magnet!

But, the site I linked to earlier mentions that the Navajo fear having the correct version of any of their holy people in just anyone's hands. So, these pieces, and any of the ones found available for commercial sale, have important mistakes on them, so that they're not accurate depictions of the real thing. Whew.

When I learned that, it sort of made me feel a lot better, because I also felt just a little oooky having bought a magnet of one of entire culture's holy figures.

Of course, now that I've read up on this stuff, next time I'm back home, I'm totally heading back to the museum to go see if Mother Earth is there on sale, because now it's freaking me out, not having a complete set. Every image I've seen of Father Sky, he's usually standing right beside Mother Earth.

Maybe he's lonely. Maybe it's the reason for the last year of insanity. Maybe if I right the balance, things will go swimmingly.

What? I know I'm not Navajo, but whatever you believe in, don't go tempting the fates of someone else's culture or beliefs.

I learned that the hard way - having left my ATM card in an ATM, after kindasorta mocking the creepy music and the creepy guy following us around the Joseph Smith birthplace we just had to visit in Vermont.

But maybe that's another magnet...

Here's lookin' at you, joy. Part two, electric Moose-a-loo

Magnet #925 - Moose

Yes. I totally bought this second magnet from that same gas station in Massachusetts. What?

This guy was totally what I was looking for all up and down the Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont part of our roadtrip this week.

What? It's not like they're joking when they put up those MOOSE CROSSING signs!

Sigh. The Meese must be on the same evac plans that the Bears are on when I come rollin' through town.

Quick! Joy's here, everyone! Stay outta sight!

Best stuff on earth

Magnet #653 - Ben & Jerry's Factory Tour

Ok. I've mentioned how much I love ice cream - a visit to the Ben & Jerry's Factory Tour is pretty fun. Not only do I love behind the scenes stuff, but I love seeing the factory in action.

But, I think I've now gone twice to B&J's in Vermont, and not seen the factory actually in action - just get to see the empty floors and empty machines. Nothing sadder than a factory at rest. But, I will say that it's the place I first discovered one of my favorite Ben & Jerry's flavors - Dublin Mudslide. Mmmmmm.

I had to do an ice cream post, given that I've been trying to recreate all the gelato I had in Italy. They say you should have it twice a day - while I didn't live up to that, I did manage to have a lot of it.

My favorite gelato in any store, in any town? Nicciola - hazelnut. Best recreated by Ciao Bella's Nicciola sorbet. So. Freakin'. Good.

Even when it's 38 degrees outside.

Attention, Motorists! New England is closed.

Magnet #337 - Vermont State Capitol

So even though I just got back from London last month, I'm finding myself living vicariously through Goldengait's London blogposts. Yesterday, she started out with a plan, and was thwarted at every turn.

Ya'll know that I like to travel. With an itinerary. A fully packed, fully researched itinerary. And maps. Lots of maps.

Sometimes, even those don't help. But, always, when the wind takes you down the road, that's when the fun begins.

Take, for example, the New England weekender my roadtrip buddies and I did. That's how we found out that Montpelier, VT, is quite possibly the cutest state capital in the country. Seriously. We fell in love with this town. From the Corner Café with the old timers out front, to the used bookstore down the street, and the family maple syrup farm up the mountain to the sweetest capitol building ever.

It's seriously as cute as Stars Hollow from Gilmore Girls. And I've been there, so I know from cute. It was one of the highlights of our trip.

Of course, it didn't hurt that every other attraction we drove to...was CLOSED.

No joke. It became the running theme of the trip - everywhere we went, places were closed for the winter season. Dudes. We went in April!

And it wasn't just the attractions. We were navigating secondary roads, until we made the wrong turn, and the road ran out. The bridge was out - frozen over. Freaky.

A recap list of our trip. Of course, you'll be revisiting some of these sites in magnet form. Well, not the ones that were CLOSED.

Kiss me, Joy

Magnet #81 - Vermont Teddy Bear

I picked a bear for today's magnet, because I just saw Caspian. I'll refrain from an early review of it, only because I wasn't as superthrilled with this installment as I was the first. But, there was a very, very silly bear in it...and ya'll know I love my bears.

Anyway. So, Vermont Teddy Bear Factory. Yep. You guessed it. There was a tour. What? It's not like I go and do these things on my own. More often or not, I've conned some poor sucker (or two) to take the tours with me!

The factory tour in Shelburne, VT, was so much fun...except for the parts that kinda creeped me out. We had a funny tour guide, and everyone knows the tour guide totally makes or breaks a tour. He took us around the each teddy bear station, where they make the parts and pieces, showed us some patterns and stuff, and then the tour ends with us making bears.

Yep, it's the build-a-bear set-up, where they charge exorbitant prices for the bears and the accoutrements, and you have to make your bear. So even after seeing all the behind the scenes stuff about the bears, I was still totally creeped out in the build-a-bear room:

  1. They had the empty and wilted bearskins just sitting around in bins. Bet those damn things come alive at night - like something out of a scary Doctor Who episode. Bet money the Doctor himself would be creeped out.
  2. They take the poor little bearskins and SHWOOOSH the thing up with stuffing! Ewwww! So freaky!

But, still, we made our bears. Mine's supercute, but I'll always remember what he looked like all pre-stuffing empty. On top of that, he'll always serve as reminder of my fight with the tour guide.

They give you this weird little red felt heart to put inside the bear before they sew it up. But, they make you kiss the heart (and I guess put all your hopes and dreams into that kiss) before they poke the darn thing into the stuffing through hole in the bear's lower back (ouch).

Tour guide (holds out heart): Kiss the heart.

Me: Uhhh, I don't want to.

Tour guide (holds out heart insistently): Kiss the heart.

Me: No.

Tour guide (with a superhard stare): KISS. THE. HEART.

Me: *kisses heart*
